Normandy

Trip to the WWII sites in Normandy, France 28-30 May 2011. Stops included the D-day museum, the Airborne Museum, Iron Mike statue, the American sectors of Utah and Omaha beaches, the Canadian Sector on Juno beach and Point du Hoc, and most humbling of all, the American cemetary - Colleville, with its 9,386 American Soldiers both known and unknown resting here, located just off of Omaha beach, . For those who watched Band of Brothers, we did pass by Brecourt Manor several times, no stops, but wasn't anything there worth photographing.

This is a mannequin of John Steele of the 82 Airborne who's parachute was hung-up on this church steeple during the Airborne drop into Normandy on D-Day. John Steele played dead on this steeple for nearly 4 hours, watching the carnage below, before finally being captured by the Germans. However, and thankfully, shortly after his capture he was rescued by the advancing US troops.
Sherman tank outside of the Airborne museum. One note about Normandy...the locals, even today's generation, is still very appreciative about their liberation from the Nazi's. American, Canadian, British and French flags fly everywhere. However, I also saw many areas where just the American flag was flying.
